Zohran Mamdani: Transits and Progressions
Zohran Mamdani's rise from a Queens state assemblyman to Mayor of New York City happened with unusual speed. He formally entered the mayoral race in October 2024, won the Democratic primary in June 2025, won the general election that November and took office on 1 January 2026.
That political trajectory can be studied through several astrological techniques, but transits and secondary progressions tell rather different parts of the story. Transits describe the planets moving through the sky and the way they temporarily interact with the natal chart. Secondary progressions move the natal chart forward symbolically, using the traditional equation of roughly one day after birth for one year of life. Progressions tend to describe slower developmental changes rather than individual events.
In Mamdani's case, the two techniques overlap in a particularly interesting way. The transits surrounding his election contain strong signatures of expansion, pressure and institutional change, while the progressed chart shows a much longer process of public emergence that was already under way before voters went to the polls.
The Natal Chart Behind The Story
Mamdani was born on 18 October 1991 at 1.15am in Kampala, Uganda. His recorded birth data gives him a Libra Sun at approximately 24 degrees, an Aquarius Moon at 18 degrees and a Leo Ascendant just inside the sign. His Midheaven is approximately 4 degrees Taurus.
Mercury and Mars are both in early Scorpio, Venus and Jupiter are in Virgo, Saturn is at the beginning of Aquarius and Pluto is in Scorpio.
Even before considering progressions, there is a useful political tension here. Libra concerns negotiation, coalition and the relationship between competing interests, while Scorpio introduces intensity, strategic focus and questions of power. Aquarius adds a collective dimension to the Moon, and Leo rising makes public visibility an important feature of how the chart meets the world.
None of those placements determines Mamdani's political ideology. They become more useful when we look at how the chart was being activated during his transition from legislator to mayor.
The Progressed Moon Entered The Public Part Of The Chart
The clearest progression in the entire story is the secondary progressed Moon.
During the mayoral campaign, Mamdani's progressed Moon was travelling through Taurus. With Leo rising, Taurus is his tenth whole-sign house, the part of the horoscope traditionally connected with office, public standing, reputation and vocation.
More precisely, the progressed Moon crossed his natal Midheaven at approximately 4 degrees Taurus in early February 2025.
That occurred several months after he had launched his campaign but before the June Democratic primary transformed him from one candidate among many into the party's nominee.
The timing is notable because a progressed Moon crossing the Midheaven is one of the classic symbolic indicators of increased public exposure. It does not guarantee promotion or electoral success; somebody might change career, become more visible for difficult reasons or experience a major reorientation of public priorities. What it does tend to emphasise is the relationship between the individual and the wider world.
For Mamdani, the manifestation was unusually literal. His professional and political identity became visible to an electorate vastly larger than the state assembly district he had previously represented.
Taurus Also Matters
The sign through which the progressed Moon travelled is relevant too. Taurus is concerned astrologically with material security, resources and tangible value.
Mamdani's mayoral campaign centred heavily upon affordability. His most recognisable proposals included freezing rents for rent-stabilised tenants, making buses free and expanding childcare. The same themes featured prominently in his inaugural address after he took office.
It would be simplistic to say that a Taurus progression produced an affordability campaign. The policies arose from political commitments and material conditions in New York. Symbolically, however, the timing is coherent: the progressed Moon entered the most publicly visible part of the chart while the campaign concentrated on the cost and security of everyday life.
The Democratic Primary: Jupiter And Pluto Activate Mercury
On 24 June 2025, Mamdani won the Democratic mayoral primary. The official ranked-choice count ultimately gave him 573,169 votes in the final round against Andrew Cuomo's 443,229.
The transits that day are particularly interesting around natal Mercury at approximately 3 degrees Scorpio.
Transiting Jupiter was at approximately 3 degrees Cancer, making a close trine to Mercury. At almost exactly the same time, Pluto at approximately 3 degrees Aquarius was squaring that Mercury.
Those are very different planets operating on the same natal point.
Jupiter-Mercury can symbolise expansion of a message: more people hearing it, ideas travelling further and communication acquiring a larger platform. Pluto-Mercury is more intense. It can correspond with language becoming consequential, scrutiny increasing and communication becoming inseparable from questions of influence and power.
That combination fits the primary remarkably well without needing to make it predictive. Mamdani's campaign became nationally discussed, but increased visibility also meant that his statements, ideology and previous positions received far greater examination.
Pluto's square to natal Mercury was not a one-day transit. It belongs to a longer period in which the political consequences of communication become heavier. The primary simply provided one highly visible expression of it.
Election Day: Jupiter Squares The Sun
By the general election on 4 November 2025, another major transit had moved into position.
Jupiter was at approximately 25 degrees Cancer, forming a close square to Mamdani's natal Sun at approximately 24 degrees Libra.
Jupiter is often treated rather lazily as the planet of good luck. Its symbolism is broader: enlargement, opportunity, visibility, confidence and the tendency for circumstances to grow beyond their previous scale.
A square does not make that expansion effortless. It introduces pressure.
Mamdani was moving from representing one Assembly district to seeking responsibility for a city of more than eight million people. The office became larger, the political stakes became larger and national attention around his candidacy became larger.
Jupiter square the Sun describes expansion with consequences rather better than simple “fortune”.
Two slower transits deepen the picture. Pluto in early Aquarius was conjunct Mamdani's natal Saturn while simultaneously squaring his natal Mars in early Scorpio. Saturn represents institutions, authority and responsibility; Mars represents action, contest and assertion. Pluto intensifies whatever it touches and often raises questions about power and structural change.
The symbolism suits the transition from campaigning against existing arrangements to assuming authority within one of the largest municipal governments in the world.
The Progressed Moon At The Inauguration
By 1 January 2026, when Mamdani took office, his progressed Moon had reached approximately 17 degrees Taurus.
His natal Moon is approximately 18 degrees Aquarius.
The progressed Moon was therefore forming an almost exact square to the natal Moon.
Secondary progressed Moon-to-Moon squares occur as part of a roughly 27-year progression cycle and can mark important developmental turning points. Symbolically, the established emotional or habitual pattern represented by the natal Moon meets the needs of a new phase.
For a public figure, it is worth being careful not to turn this into speculation about private feelings or mental state. What can safely be said is that the progression coincided with an unusually sharp change in lived circumstances: candidate became office-holder, campaign organisation became city administration and political promises encountered the machinery required to implement them.
The progressed Moon remained in Taurus and in the public tenth-house sector throughout most of 2026, so the process represented by the campaign did not simply end on election night. The emphasis shifted from becoming visible to inhabiting the role.
September 2026: The Astrology Becomes More Confrontational
The current transits are considerably more abrasive than those surrounding the beginning of the campaign.
On 18 September 2026, Mars is at approximately 24 degrees Cancer, almost exactly square Mamdani's 24-degree Libra Sun. Pluto remains close to 3 degrees Aquarius, maintaining its square to natal Mercury. Jupiter in Leo is approaching an opposition to his Aquarius Moon, while Uranus in Gemini is moving into a square with natal Jupiter in Virgo.
The September ephemeris confirms the concentration of Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto around these natal positions.
Mars square the Sun is straightforward symbolism for contest, pressure and situations requiring direct action. Mamdani's administration is now operating rather than campaigning, and September has included disputes involving federal immigration policy as well as the ordinary demands of municipal government. New York City recently joined other jurisdictions in litigation challenging a new federal public-charge rule, illustrating the kinds of city-versus-federal conflicts now reaching the mayor's office.
Pluto square Mercury continues the deeper theme around communication and power. Every statement by a mayor is different from a statement by a campaigning assemblyman. Words can move markets, affect negotiations, shape relationships with state and federal government and become part of litigation or administrative policy.
Jupiter opposing the natal Moon can enlarge public response and the number of competing constituencies demanding attention. Again, this is not automatically favourable or unfavourable. Jupiter enlarges the field.
The Progressed Moon Is About To Change Signs
The next significant progression is close.
Mamdani's progressed Moon is now around 27 degrees Taurus and is due to enter Gemini in November 2026. In Whole Sign terms, that moves it from the tenth house of office and public standing into the eleventh house of alliances, groups, networks and collective objectives.
This should not be read as a prediction about political success or failure. It suggests a change of emphasis.
The Taurus phase corresponded strikingly with the acquisition and consolidation of public office. Gemini introduces a more Mercurial environment: communication, multiple relationships, competing messages and the need to work through networks rather than through the symbolism of personal ascent alone.
For a mayor, that can be read quite practically. Governing a city depends upon council relationships, Albany, Washington, unions, agencies, advocacy groups and a large administrative apparatus. The political story becomes increasingly collective.
There is another slower development ahead. Mamdani's progressed Sun is currently at approximately 29 degrees Scorpio and will eventually enter Sagittarius in 2027. Progressed Sun sign changes occur only a few times in a lifetime and are often treated as major shifts in the style through which purpose and identity are expressed.
Scorpio concentrates and intensifies. Sagittarius broadens, teaches and seeks a larger horizon. It is too early , and politically too speculative , to attach a concrete outcome to that transition, but astrologically it marks the end of one long developmental chapter and the beginning of another.
Transits Describe Events; Progressions Describe The Longer Arc
The most interesting feature of Mamdani's astrology is the way the two techniques tell complementary stories.
The transits around the 2025 elections were loud: Jupiter enlarging the Sun and Mercury, Pluto pressing upon Mercury, Mars and Saturn, and Uranus introducing institutional change. They fit a period in which external circumstances moved quickly.
The progressions are quieter but perhaps more revealing. The progressed Moon crossed the Midheaven during the campaign, travelled through the tenth house as Mamdani moved into City Hall and squared the natal Moon around the inauguration. It now approaches another threshold as it leaves Taurus for Gemini.
At Wilfred Hazelwood Astrology, this distinction is valuable. Astrology becomes less interesting when every transit is treated as an isolated prediction. A major life development usually contains both: the immediate triggers shown by transits and a slower internal or developmental cycle shown by progressions.
Mamdani's chart provides an unusually clear example. His election did not appear astrologically as one fortunate day detached from everything around it. The public phase had been developing for months, while the deeper planetary cycles continue well into his administration.
The astrology therefore says less about a single victory than about a transition from campaigning, to public emergence, to the much more complicated task of exercising institutional power.
