Martyn J. Shrewsbury Elected to the APAI Council
We are delighted to share some significant news with our clinic community. Martyn J. Shrewsbury, the lead therapist here at the Wilfred Hazelwood Clinic, has recently been elected as a council member of the Association of Professional Astrologers International, widely known as the APAI. Alongside this leadership role, Martyn has also been appointed to the editorial board of the association's quarterly magazine, Chronycle.
For those who have worked with Martyn in his capacity as a psychological astrologer, you will already know how deeply he values rigorous study and ethical practice. This recent election is a wonderful reflection of those exact values being recognised on an international stage.
What is the APAI?
The Association of Professional Astrologers International is a highly regarded professional body representing qualified astrologers to both the media and the wider public. Established in 1990, the organisation was founded with a very specific goal: to ensure that practising astrologers maintain the highest possible standards in all of their dealings with clients.
Unlike casual or entertainment-focused astrology networks, the APAI operates strictly as a professional regulator and support system for accredited practitioners. Membership is not handed out lightly. To even qualify to join, an astrologer must have received a comprehensive diploma from a heavily vetted list of accredited educational schools.
What Does the Association Actually Do?
The core focus of the APAI is the protection and reassurance of the public. When someone reaches out to an astrologer, they are often navigating vulnerable emotional territory or seeking clarity on major life decisions. The APAI ensures that this process is handled with the utmost care, confidentiality, and competence.
Their ongoing work involves several important functions:
- Mandating that all qualifying members sign a strict Code of Ethics, guaranteeing a safe and reliable service that protects clients from malpractice.
- Providing a verified consultants list so that the public can easily find experienced, highly qualified astrologers.
- Offering a mentorship scheme for newly qualified practitioners, ensuring the next generation of astrologers are guided by seasoned professionals.
- Acting as a point of contact for the media when accurate, professional insight is required regarding astrological events.
Shaping the Conversation: Chronycle Magazine
As part of his new responsibilities, Martyn has also taken a seat on the editorial board for the APAI's quarterly publication, Chronycle. This magazine is a vital resource for members, acting as a space for high-level debate, ongoing education, and the sharing of complex astrological research.
Being on the editorial board means Martyn will have a direct hand in curating the conversations and studies that shape the professional astrological community today. He will be reviewing submissions, guiding editorial themes, and ensuring that the content reflects the rigorous, evidence-backed approach the APAI demands. You can get a sense of the publication's depth by reading the latest edition of the magazine.
A Meaningful Milestone
This is a particularly prestigious opportunity for Martyn, and by extension, our clinic. Throughout his career, Martyn has actively sought to bridge the gap between ancient traditions and modern psychological understanding.
His background is extensive, beginning with degrees in Social Anthropology and Classics from Swansea University, followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma in Jungian Studies. He then layered this with advanced astrological training under Steve Judd, Hellenistic Astrology with Chris Brennan, and Psychological Astrology with John Green. Martyn also holds certification from the Centre for Psychological Astrology and has trained in Clinical Concepts with The Centre for Applied Jungian Studies.
The APAI recognises this rare blend of deep psychological training and highly structured astrological education. By inviting him onto the council and the editorial board, they are acknowledging his unique ability to harmonise mental well-being with astrological insight. For our clients at the Wilfred Hazelwood Clinic, it serves as a wonderful reassurance that your therapeutic journey is being guided by a practitioner whose expertise is not just locally valued, but internationally accredited and respected.
