Mars Colonies and Cosmic Karma: What Astrology Says About Humanity’s Future in Space
The race to the Red Planet is no longer science fiction. With billionaires like Elon Musk building starships and NASA plotting trajectories, the colonisation of Mars seems inevitable. But while the engineers worry about radiation shields and fuel synthesis, at the Wilfred Hazelwood Clinic, we find ourselves asking a different set of questions. What does it mean, astrologically and psychologically, to move our civilisation to the planet of War?
My background in Social Anthropology at Swansea University taught me that migration is never just a physical movement; it is a transfer of culture, myth, and trauma. As we stand on the precipice of becoming a multi-planetary species, we must look at the "Cosmic Karma" we are packing in our luggage.
Leaving the Mother, Entering the Warrior
Earth, in astrological and mythological terms, is deeply connected to the archetypes of the Moon (the Mother, safety, water) and Venus (nature, harmony, life). It is a womb-like environment designed to sustain us. Mars, by contrast, is the archetype of Ares: the god of conflict, separation, adrenaline, and survival. It is dry, harsh, and demands constant battle against the elements to survive.
Psychologically, this represents a massive shift in the collective unconscious. We are moving from a "nurturing" archetype to a "survivalist" one. The danger, from a Jungian perspective, is that if we have not integrated our own aggression (our Mars function) here on Earth, we will project it onto the new landscape. A colony built without deep psychological awareness risks becoming a pressure cooker of Martian energy, conflict, competition, and authoritarianism.
Pluto in Aquarius: The Engine of the Star Trek Future
The astrological timing of this space race is no accident. In 2024, Pluto entered Aquarius, where it will remain for the next two decades. Aquarius is the sign of the future, technology, the collective, and aviation. Pluto is the planet of death, rebirth, and extreme power.
The last time Pluto was in Aquarius (1778–1798), we saw the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, power shifting to the people and the machine. This time, the "machine" is the rocket, and the "revolution" is off-world. Pluto in Aquarius demands that we transform our view of humanity. It supports the idea of a space-faring civilisation, but it also warns of the "Shadow" of Aquarius: emotional detachment and a techno-dystopia where the individual is sacrificed for the hive.
The Musk Factor: A Martian Avatar?
It is impossible to discuss Mars without discussing Elon Musk. His birth chart reveals a fascinating signature: Mars in Aquarius. This placement perfectly describes his drive, he fights (Mars) for the future (Aquarius). His actions are motivated by a detached, intellectual vision of saving the species rather than emotional sentimentality.
However, an unintegrated Mars in Aquarius can also lead to a dissociation from the present human cost in favour of a theoretical future utopia. As we follow such leaders to the stars, we must ensure we are not just running away from the mess we’ve made of our Mother Earth. In therapy, we call this "geographical cure", the false belief that moving house will fix a broken marriage.
Healing the Earth Before We Leave
The "Cosmic Karma" of Mars colonisation is simple: we cannot escape ourselves. If we travel to Mars as refugees from a dying Earth, carrying the baggage of greed, war, and exploitation, we will simply turn the Red Planet into a new battlefield. The astrology suggests that for a Mars colony to succeed, it must be founded on a new level of consciousness, one that transcends the lower vibrations of Ares.
We must learn to be "Spiritual Warriors," using the Martian energy for courage, pioneering, and protection, rather than dominance. At the Wilfred Hazelwood Clinic, we believe the journey to Mars must begin with a journey inward. Only by healing our own psyches can we hope to build a new world that is worth living in.
